Chad McCracken did not always aspire to become a Certified Prosthetist-Orthotist. In fact, he owes his career in the field to his sister.
“I was introduced to the world of prosthetics and orthotics by my sister who is a physical therapist,” says McCracken. “She thought that the mix of my schooling, the requirements needed, and my personality, that I’d be a perfect fit.”
McCracken has been working with Excel Prosthetics & Orthotics for nearly three years. He continues to enjoy the freedom and empowerment he is given in his role.
“I’m empowered to make the absolute best decisions for my patients. I don’t have to be worried about being dictated by profit or protocol,” McCracken says.
Even though his typical workday varies wildly, patient-focused care remains the core of McCracken’s work.
“It’s always about the people,” he says. “A lot of times people come to us at the lowest point in their life – in total despair. They aren’t sure about their future and a lot of times are very scared and depressed. My job is to get them moving forward and continuing on with their life.”
Even though every day isn’t easy, McCracken knows that the work he is doing is important; and the reward for helping someone is priceless.
“I really enjoy when I can return function to someone’s life, and also give them hope. I want to show them that they can get back to actually living their life. I hope to take away their fear about living with a prosthesis,” McCracken says.
Having a career in the world of prosthetics and orthotics is not for everyone. Remaining hopeful and optimistic is essential, and those moments of hope are what McCracken clings to.
“Most patients feel like they have to settle for what they are provided. There is more than one way to solve your problems. You need to work with a practitioner who will listen to you. Not everyone has the same goals and desired outcomes. We are all about the individual person. If you aren’t satisfied, you need to seek out someone who will get you there,” says McCracken.
If you or someone you know is experiencing life with a prosthetic or orthotic, or is soon to be, McCracken and the Excel team are ready to help you reach your version of success.
